Gazette's nose

If you remember Gazette you noticed his nose was entirely black...well that was until recently.
Yes, a tiny pink dot appeared on his nose after a trip to the vet. Gazette hurt his nose a little while in the carrier...and it healed pink. How cute ^_^

Star Cat of the Day : Frank

Frank Kitten McBain is Bob's brother, and Eugénie's son. He is also known as Fronk, Frankie Nutella, Frank d'Amour.

He was the smallest of the 3 kittens but the bold one! First to leave the nest, first to explore the garden, first to try new food...Oddly he is a real little homebody. He loves his routine and tends to do the same things at the same time everyday...which is mainly napping.

He is also the only of the 3 kittens to look a bit like his Persian mom with a flatter nose, big chin and big round eyes. He is very good-looking...and I usually take a lot of pictures of him as he is so photogenic (and doesn't move much).

He got his nickname "Frankie Nutella" after he stole a bit of nutella pancake in my plate. He didn't eat it but he got nutella all over himself...and I can tell you that a nutella smelling kitten DOES send mixed messages to my brain LOL

Frank is not very cuddly. Well, he hardly ever asks for a cuddle...but as a friend pointed out, why would he bother "you're always running after him and cuddling him whether he wants it or not". True enough ;)

Release the kraken!

Frank is usually very quiet and easy going...except when you eat poultry...then he completely loses it. He'll attack you and try to steal everything he can.

Star Cat of the Day : Bob

Prince Bob (mega)Kitten Mc Bain, also known as le Beau Bob or Bob le Beau (the beautiful Bob), Bob le Bon or le Bon Bob (the good Bob) or Bobo is one of the 3 kittens born on my bed during the second night in the new house.
Bob was always the biggest of the 3....he is also the cuddliest...as a baby he could stay for hours in my lap...and he still does that from time to time.

What else can I say about Bob? He is his mommy's boy, he is easily scared and will hide away if anyone comes to the house. He loves staying outside when the weather is good. He is a nap expert.

When his sister Zoé died last year he was really upset as the 2 were really close...and that made him even cuddlier.

He disappeared once when he was a kitten, we looked all over for hours...only to find him sleeping in the bottle rack in the kitchen (first picture).

I love his eyes, he is very good at making sad puppy eyes (but don't tell him because all doggies are ugly and stink)

Star Cat of the Day : le 1/4 d'une Noix

Le 1/4 d'une Noix Mc Bain (1/4 of a Walnut) got his name because he was such a tiny kitten when I got him.
On a warm spring day 4 years ago, I heard a kitten meowing like crazy somewhere in the garden. I quickly found the tiny black as night kitten perched high in a tree...and he wouldn't come down.
He stayed there for hours, constantly crying...I gave up trying to get him down, figuring he'd come down by himself when he was hungry or bored enough.

And in the evening, the tiny kitten was finally down and checking the food in my kitchen!
At that point I thought he belonged to someone, he'd probably go home or someone would come looking for him. But no, he didn't leave and no one came looking...so he stayed.

Le 1/4 no longer fits his name much, he grew a LOT. He is always eating or looking for food. I don't think he was ever hungry except for that time in the tree...but that caused a life long trauma ;) Each time you step into the kitchen, he appears, you cannot cook without having him around....and I SWEAR he can hear the sound of milk!
And he never skips a meal, whether his or yours!

He is not terribly cuddly, except at times when he suddenly needs a hug...and then leaves as quickly as he came. He is hard to take photos of, he never stands still + he is all black and pictures of him tend to look like just a black spot. He is a very handsome cat, all black, sleek, with super shiny fur and a super cute turned-up nose.
He has got many nicknames, all starting with "the 1/4" of something... The 1/4 of love, the 1/4 of a pain in the ***, the 1/4 of a coconut...

Star Cat of the Day : Diego

Diego "el loco blanco" Mc Bain is Dora's best friend. Yes, I highly suspect the only reason he moved in when he was about 1 was because he loves Dora so much. I have no idea where he comes from, he just appeared regularly in the garden to lick Dora's head...and one day just stayed. Maybe Dora liked the idea of having a hairdresser 24/24.

Diego is hyperactive. He is constantly moving thus making it really hard to take a good picture of him.

He is not exactly the sharpest kitty ever, but what he lacks in brain he sure makes up for in sweetness. And no, though he is white he is not deaf. I have learned that white kitties with green eyes are genetically black and white cats with just a large white spot .

I called him Diego because it's the name of Dora's cousin in the cartoon...and also because of Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega...for the way he always zooms around the place.

Princess Dora Mc Bain is the sweetest kitty ever. She arrived to my house with her sister Sally when they were a few weeks old and after they decided they were not meant for feral life. Sadly Sally, an all black kitty quickly died of FIP. At first Dora was extremely shy, I could not touch her but I could talk to her. Dora enjoys talks. Though she would not come to me during day time, it was a different thing at night. When she thought I was asleep, she would jump on my bed and sleep right next to me. Really, really close with her little nose almost touching mine. Dora is no longer shy. She adores cuddles from both people and other cats. And she has a best cat friend, Diego who enjoys licking her head. Dora must have a very nice smelling head because I have noticed that most of my other cats like to lick her head too.

She has grown a little bit chubby over time but she is the nicest cat ever. Exercising is not one of her priorities. I have never seen her being mean or naughty, or even hissing. And she has the cutest kitten eyes and nose.

Let me introduce you to Eugénie McBain. Little Eugénie (yes, she may look big but it's mostly hair) didn't have a fun start in life. She is Persian and her previous owners used her as a breeding cat. She was in a house where she was mostly neglected, never being groomed nor much looked after. Over time the previous owners got tired of her and let her out (she was locked inside before that)...and Eugénie found the way to my house...Where she mostly hid in various places. I let her in because she was limping...I quickly found out it was because of a huge tick on her paw. For a while it was like that, Eugénie would come and hide in my house, and the previous owners would come and get her back. As she was not neutered, she had kittens quite often, and the first time she came in my lap was to give birth. When I moved, the previous owners just told me I could have her...though their nasty brat was adamant they had paid for her and that they should just keep her :/ Eugénie gave birth again, on the second night in the new house. On me again...while I was sleeping. That's how I ended up with 3 extra kittens, Bob, Frank and Zoé (on the top picture). Eugénie stays a very aloof kitty, she never asks for cuddles, never sleeps near me. She hates being groomed so she usually is a big mess of tangled hair in the winter (I shave her in the summer). She is no longer hiding though, now she prefers to sleep on her back in the middle of the room, the more in the way, the better. She is neutered now, and though she always looks grumpy I think she must be happy ^_^

Banana muffins

Some of my favorite muffins. I love them because they are not too sweet and the banana taste is subtle. I know it's a lot of ingredients for muffins, but they are worth the trouble!

Ingredients : 240 gr white flour
75 gr oat flakes
3 coffee spoons baking powder
55 gr brown sugar
75 gr dry dates (cut in small pieces) soaked in hot water
40 gr pecan nuts (small pieces)
2 coffee spoons cinammon
salt
190gr Greek yogurt
115 ml sunflower oil
75 ml coco milk
60 gr honey
3 eggs
1 coffee spoon vanilla extract (I use a small pack of vanilla sugar)
225 gr banana (squished)

Mix all the dry ingredients together and the wet ones together, then roughly mix both dry and wet mixes. Preheat the oven at 180° Bake 20 to 25 minutes.

Star Cat of the Day : GP

GP McBain (also known as Pounet) is the ultimate rescued kitty. GP stands for "grosses pattes" (big paws in French), as he has a strange disease that makes all his white cells accumulate in his lower limbs.
GP belonged to someone else but he occasionally came in the garden, I noticed him because he has a "bad" eye, he got wounded and it never properly healed. Obviously he was not much cared for .

He looked nice enough, not picking fights with my own cats. Then one winter I noticed that he was in the garden a lot, and that he walked funny...so I tried to to pet him and catch him to see what was wrong. Poor GP not only had this uncurable paw problem, he also had coryza and looked really thin and...well about to die really.

So I took him in.

The vet was not very hopeful, on top of his various health conditions, he also had a broken tail.

Well, we are now 3 years later. GP has good days and bad days, he sleeps a lot...but he seems happy, "I won the lottery" happy actually ;)

He eats well, and likes cuddles too...and he is the ultimate sunbeam napper :) But what I like best about him, is the way he looks at me with adoring eyes.

And the vet can't believe he is still with us!

Spring is here

Spring is here :) To celebrate I planted an apple tree and a raspberry plant. And I took some pictures of the garden in the first warm sun of the year!

The askew bunny...about the only thing I kept from the junk the previous owners of the house left behind.

Hopefully many raspberries to come!

And the apple tree! Granted it doesn't look very impressive...but even the largest baobab was once a baby tree!

Star Cat of the Day : Doudou aka Kevin aka Voldemort

I don't really remember how Doudou McBain became my cat...or rather how I became his human. Voldemort, his first name, just popped in the garden once in while. He seemed rather aggressive toward the other cats...but I am not sure whether he really was mean, or if it's just his imposing stature that made me think so. Yes, Voldy IS huge, a lot bigger than my other cats. He got his Voldemort name when the kittens flocked around him like little deatheaters ;) It was very sweet to see him being all shy around those tiny kittens.

When he decided to stay around, he got his second name, Kevin. Why Kevin you may ask? Well, it's from a sketch from a famous Belgian stand up comedian. He has recurring characters named Kevin and Nathalie (my name).

He got his third name, Doudou, when I found out he has no teeth left. My poor fearsome grumpy "little" Doudou won't bite you.
He kept his 3 names, and I use all 3 depending on my level of annoyance with him.

Doudou is very clingy, especially in the evening, when he just HAS to sleep on someone, and I can tell you it's not terribly comfortable to have that giant kitty on your stomach and lungs.

Star Cat of the Day : Zouzou

Zouzou Pitchoune McBain is Daget's (whom we met last week) sister.
Zouzou is one strange kitty if there ever was one. Like her siblings she was born feral, and until the age of 1 (and spending a winter outside) she absolutely refused to come in the house, or be touched, or even be looked at for too long.
As a result I couldn't have her spayed, and she had babies when she was 1. Her mom Boudine had kittens at the same time, so I never knew who was the mom of whom from their 7 kittens.
Then, one cold night she decided she liked being inside the house...and that sleeping on a bed was not completely uncomfortable...as long as she was not looked at.
But once inside, and with the use of many kitchen ustensils (long story) I managed to catch her and take her to the vet.
Then she went back to being the wild one...inside ;)
Years later she broke one of her back paws...so I had to catch her again, which was not easier than the first time...And she must have remembered the vet pretty well because once her carrier was opened she jumped out on 3 paws and hid inside the X-ray machine .
And what fun it was to try to get her out.
So you have now to imagine me, completely lying on the floor, with my arm stretched inside the X-ray machine...with the vet saying "you'll never get her out, you'll never get her out!"
I got her out!
Back at home, with her paw in a large plastic thingy, she was not any nicer. She escaped, and she bit me while I was trying to get her back. That resulted in a doctor visit and 2 shots for me. I guess she had her revenge ...and she just limped back inside in the evening as if nothing had happened.On this last picture, Zouzou, Boudine and the 7 kittens.
But that's not all...for some unexplained reasons, when she turned 8 or 9, shortly after her sister Norbert died, Zouzou, the not-to-be-touched kitty, became Miss Clingy. She now adores hugs and cuddles...and is very vocal too. She also started to tip over all glasses within her reach, something her sister did all the time too.

Canapés

I had guests on sunday and I like making little "canapés" to have with the "apéritif". I made 6 types this time.

1. Salmon "rillettes" with cherry tomatoes
2. Boiled eggs, mayo and dry sausage
3. Goat cheese with fresh pear and paprika

4. Avocado puree with smoked salmon and lemon
5. Pâté de foie (homemade) with mayo and pickles
6. Cherry tomatoes with salmon rillettes (those were and "afterthought" as I had too many tomatoes and too much salmon left)

I'll spare you the "before" photo with its pile of used tissues, candy wrappers and grocery bills. It's back to the essentials (believe it or not all those cute pouches have an actual use)! All clean, lean and most of all LIGHT!

My favorite films

I love films. I am a film maniac. And some movies just stick with you forever. Blade Runner is one those films for me.
Over the years Blade Runner has achieved a cult status, and quite rightly too as it is a master piece.
Yes, it is grim and gloomy...but each and every single shot was carefully thought of and is like a little painting.
Yes, maybe Blade Runner appeals to me more because I love science fiction, and Philip K. Dick is one of my favorite writer (he wrote the orignal novel: Do androids dream of electric sheeps?)
It is also very much influenced by the film noir genre which I love.

But most of all, Blade Runner is about mood, and yet still has a story.
Deckard, the main character (?) is not a hero, he barely makes it to the end. Though we're uncomfortable identifying with him all through the movie, we can't help feeling his pains and conflicts. It took me many viewings to realize that Deckard was not even human, and that was a mind blowing experience for me...and made me watch the film a few more times.
"More human than human" is the motto of the Tyrell Corporation which engineers those "fake humans"...and it's the whole plot in one sentence. The "fake humans" turn out to be just as human as anybody , wanting and longing for the exact same things: to love and be loved.

Star Cat of the Day : Daget

There was once a female kitty named Boudine (Tummy) who was feral and lived in my garden. Boudine was pretty wild and I couldn't catch her to have her spayed. So once in a while she brought me back her kittens. Daget is one of those kittens.
Daget McBain was from a kindle of 4, she had a twin sister Norbert (on the picture above, who sadly passed away a few years ago), a brother called Buffy (who was very wild and died young) and another sister Zouzou (who is still here). As you probably noticed I managed to give boy names to girls and vice versa ;) Norbert and Daget are the names of cartoon beavers.

Daget is very shy...and came into the house only because her twin came first. Norbert was not shy at all. Though she lived inside, I couldn't touch her. And then one day she got attacked and wounded by a dog when she was a few months old.
Somehow, while I was looking after her and treated her, she became a bit less shy...and now she is a very sweet kitty. She likes cuddles and snuggles...but only if she is sure she is not in the way...which makes her even more endearing. She is 11 going on 12.

This week I have re-stocked! My mushroom necklace had been sold out for a long time as I couldn't find more identical bezels to make them. I simply decided to make them with a different bezel, and they're pretty too ;)
Oddly, though they're my best seller everywhere , I never sold a single one on Etsy...though it's my most hearted item ever!

I was lucky enough to catch the sale fairy released by IngerMaaike. And my fairy flew all the way from Norway to me with her fluffy soft wings :)

On this first picture you can see her approaching...look it's a tiny spot in the 3rd lower half on the left of the tree!

Junk Lady from the movie Labyrinth

Don't you feel overwhelmed by your belongings sometimes?

I have a strange relationship with "things". On one hand I am a collector (of all things Alice in Wonderland mostly), on the other I don't get attached to objects much.
I have no interest in expensive "brand" items...and if you ask me what my most beloved possession is it'd be a tie between an old falling apart pillow, a worn down teddy bear and a fossilized and gross piece of chocolate I cannot bring myself to throw away. Well, of course those 3 items are very emotional things to me.

So how did I end up with so much clutter ?

And how did I end up as a would-be "maker and seller of stuff"?

My cats : Gazette

Inspired by Estella from Starofthe east on Etsy, I decided to present you my kitties.
Today star cat is Gazette.
Gazette "El Loco" Mc Bain, also known as the Mysterious Gazette got his name after I tried to chase him away with a newspaper. Yes, because Gazette just arrived in my house one day without being invited. It was a summer day and the garden door was opened. He came in, started eating and went to nap on the sofa...and never left, even after my attempts at scaring him with a newspaper.

I am not sure how old he is as he was a full grown and operational (as in spayed LOL) kitteh when he arrived which makes him at least 11 now...though you couldn't tell as Gazette is one of those cats who doesn't seem affected by the passing of time.
Though he is very cuddly and unfazed, he can be quite unpredictable at times, earning him his nickname of "El Loco" (the crazy one). So if you see scratched wallpaper at a surprising height on the wall (2 meters and higher), don't look any further, El Loco did it.

To this day I have no idea where he comes from, what decided him to instantly adopt me as he looked well looked after and not abandonned at all. I joke he just came back to the wrong house and never realized it ;)

Photo editing

I get asked on regular basis if I edit my photos. The answer is YES, I edit my photos a lot. I am not good at photography and I have a very basic camera...fortunately I learned Photoshop at school ;)
Most of my photos start very dark and grey (I don't have any professional lights therefore I use only natural light). They lack depth and colors are always either too blue or too orangey...

I usually adjust the levels of black and white, the contrast, the colors. Then I make the difference between light and dark zones less striking, and play a bit with contrast and luminosity. Sometimes I also play with the color balance a little more.

Yes, it's time consuming but in the end it's not so much the product than the photo of the product you sell online.

I don't see it as cheating either, because what I see with my own eyes is a lot more similar to the second photo...

CAVEAT EMPTOR When things go wrong

Internet business is fun and problem free....most of the time. But sometimes problems arise.
I tend to think I am fairly cautious in most cases. But sometimes crooks find a way to rip you off one way or another. Well, with me , my weak point is that I trust people I think I know. I can't think that people are up to something bad all the time.
Last October a former European Street member on Etsy offered to make merchant website for other members. As the price was interesting (200 eur,well, that should have been the first warning sign) I took the offer on. She didn't want the transaction to be made through Etsy (second warning sign). I paid in 4 installments...and , well, you guessed the rest. No website. Not much communication from the "webmaster" and that person also stopped being active on Etsy (though she is back now under an other username). I keep getting the same answers "I am working on it" or "you're not getting my emails". Right. Doesn't say much about a webmaster who can't even send an email to the right address. And those crooks have a way to make YOU feel bad when THEY are the one doing something WRONG. I know for a fact she is not working on my website because my FTP (Internet host) hasn't been accessed at all during all that time.
I also should have done some researches, I would have seen she abandoned 2 of her previous Etsy shops after various feedbacks for non-delivery.
Also I am not the only victim :(
As most of you know, I already have a lawyer (for the numerous house problems) so last time I had him on the phone I asked for advice.
Today I started the chargeback process. It makes me sad and disgusted. If the Paypal process doesn't work (as deadlines are long gone) I'll have to turn to my CC company. Lawyer also suggested I file a police complaint on http://www.ecops.be/ for internet fraud.
*Sigh*, another lawsuit.

So here's a few reminders for online transactions (yes, you know them, I knew them too):
1. Don't accept "off" website transactions on sites like Etsy, Ebay...
2. Never let Paypal deadlines expire. It's only 45 days, but you can still complain to them after that (they recommand it too, so they know whom they're dealing with)
3. Don't trust "friends" when it comes to large sums of money ( not a fun advice, I know). Let's face it, you always think you know the person who rips you off.

My new Moo (free) cards and stickers :) The Moo business card is the one at the bottom. The top card is a free Vista Print one. I like those too. You can see the difference of colors between the 2 cards made from the same Photshop file. The Vista Prints ones are more "true colored" but I like the vintage feel of the Moo ones.

I might order the free ones with the Dawanda discount too ;)

Moss

A few week ago after seeing several cute terrariums, I thought it'd be fun to be able to wear cute little ones too.
My first attempts were not so succesful...as I tried to use real moss from the garden. The design looked great, but the smell...OUCH, the smell... Moss by itself has a nice earthy smell...but combined with my glue, the stench was a bit overpowering...so much so infact, that I couldn't stay in the same room LOL. Those were quickly discarded and I found lovely odorless synthetic moss, chih will also last a lot longer and don't need watering ;)

Why is my bag so heavy????

"Why is my bag so heavy?" was I thinking the other day while shopping for paint?
I decided to empty it to find out when I got home....

OK, 5 packs of tissues, lots of paper trash and receipts, a huge cosmetic sample (in a glass bottle), color swatches, chocolate, cookies, a Pez dispenser in the shape of Scrat (and 2 refills just in case), packs of sugar, a large plastic ball containing a Pokemon and 5 glass balls (you get them at my local grocery store, my little cousins collect them) might not exactly be essential ...

Bag is lighter now (but Pez dispenser is back in)...

I am still busy redecorating the living room...it's taking me forever...but I'll have a nice setting to take a picture of all my Crocs together when it's done! ;)

Well, finally my Crocs have arrived...some of them anyway. Yeah, the Crocs adventures are not over. Because after being sent to France instead of Belgium, it seems one of the packages went completely AWOL

Oops sorry about scary face (complete lack of make up here)...and I was in my cleaning outfit too by the way...

Some of the Crocs (I'll take better and more organized photos later)... 11 pairs are missing :( not a big deal but that include those of my godson Hugo... It was still a very fun unpacking experience though.

After running some errands in the morning, I saw that my Sale Fairy by Lapomme had already landed near my computer.

I love her so much. She is so cute and just perfect. And I love her little box of bric-à-brac that just matches my own bric-à-brac on the desk.

The Sale Fairy got busy right away and I was featured on Etsy Front Page in a Guy Fawkes treasury. My necklace is third row. I haven't got a sale yet, but it's a good start. Well done Fairy!

Then I decided to make a courgette soup with the courgette my friend Petronella sent me (along with a recipe by her husband Pieter).

Well, fall is here and in Belgium it means the return of "cold chocolate", chocolate you're supposed to keep in the fridge before eating (but it's good even if not kept in the fridge). It is real Belgian chocolate, NOT the US candy bar that goes by the same name (and pretty much same packaging).
