September reading list

Glow-in-the-dark Mothman pin by Maiden Voyage Clothing

Not read yet:
Driving blind by Ray Bradbury.
One of my top 5 favorite authors so it's always a treat to find a book I haven't read yet. Collection of short stories.
Mysterious creatures
Cheap book part of an Atlas anthology. Yeah, OK, not quality work...but it has Mothman on the cover (in case you don't know the Mothman, check my post here). It has no Mothman stories inside though...so seriously disappointed here.

Partly read:
Brain and meditation by Matthieu Ricard and Wolf Singer. Not light reading but it sounds very interesting. Really interesting but it takes lots of concentration to read...so I won't finish it right away.
Miss Seeton by Hampton Charles.
I hated this one. Supposedly a sort of comedy detective story. Not sure why that series is so popular in the UK. Couldn't get past page 40.
The smiling man by Henning Mankell.
Reading it right now. Really good. Great characters. Great story. Great writing (even translated). You may be familiar with the TV show Wallander with Kenneth Brannagh. The show is great too. Not very cheerful though.

Read:
Ponyo storybook based on the Miyazaki movie (one of my all time favorites).
Loved it, I discovered all sort of little details I had never noticed.
The art of  My Neighbour Totoro. Making of the movie.
Wonderful if you're interested in traditional animation.
Man of two tribes
by Arthur Upfield.
This one was really interesting. I picked it because the  main character is part aborigen and the detective story is set in a desert of Australia. I enjoyed this one a lot, mainly because of the desert description and fun(if somewhat caricatural) characters. It was written in the 50's so beware of some not subtle chauvinism ;)

Have you read anything good lately? I am always on the lookout for new stuff to read.

The Mothman Prophecies

The Mothman Prophecies, miniature book by LDelaney, Etsy
During this Halloween week, I thought it’d be fitting to introduce you to my favorite creepy/scary book: the Mothman Prophecies by John A. Keel.

John Keel was an American author and journalist who investigated strange events around the world. He was a real mix of Tintin and Indiana Jones, going as far at Tibet to look for the Abominable Snowman, India and Egypt where he almost died at the hands of fake mummy makers.
In November 1966, when he heard of the strange sightings occurring in a small town in West Virginia, he couldn’t not go.

Point Pleasant is located on the River Ohio and on the border of the state by the same name. There were nothing special in that place, other than a huge bridge crossing the river and a deserted zone called the “TNT area” where explosives were stored in dome shaped bunkers during WWII. The place had become popular with teenagers.
Mid November, strange reports started pouring in from that small quiet place. People had strange frightening encounters with a dark tall creature that had huge moth like wings and glowing red eyes. Encounters that usually left the witnesses scared out of their wits and with strange sunburn marks.
During the course of the following months other strange occurrences were reported, lights in the sky, poltergeists, pet disappearances, mysterious phone calls and numerous visits by the Men in Black.
Now Men in Black are part of our folklore, thanks to Will Smith, but back in the 50’s and 60’s, Men in Black were strange beings , often showing  non-human characteristics, who enjoyed harassing UFO (and other supernatural phenomena ) witnesses.  It is little known that John Keel was almost single handedly at the origin of all that MIB folklore, being the only journalist willing to investigate.

The whole situation climaxed on December 15th of the following year, when the huge bridge collapsed into the Ohio River leaving 46 people dead. 2 bodies were never found.

No explanation was ever found either. So was it a case of mass paranoia or was the Mothman an omen of things to come?  In any case the legend lives on…and makes a quite entertaining read if you enjoy staying awake at night ;)

The book: The Mothman Prophecies by John A.Keel. A French translation is now available under the title: La Prophétie des Ombres. I mention it as the translation is quite good and the edition has a bibliography which is usually missing from the English versions.

The film starring Richard Gere (not exactly a masterpiece, loosely based on the book)
The museum.
Point Pleasant now has an annual festival celebrating the Mothman.
There’s no shortage of videos on the topic on Youtube. I recommend this one.

What I wore and other things...

As much as I love blogging it seems I can only do it when I am happy and carefree...and that doesn't seem to happen much these days. Weeks ago I prepared an outfit post...I used to love to do that...on Live Journal...last one dates 5 years back... *cringing*...so here it finally is!

A pretty subdued outfit for me. I fell in love with that shirt design from MaidenVoyageClothing. I love supernatural and paranormal stories, so this is right up my alley. (It even has a little Mothman, I am obsessed with the Mothman Prophecies by John Keel). I'll probably be getting this shirt in brown too...and possibly some other very cool designs like the Octopus and the airship. Oh, and another thing making this cryptozoology super cool, it GLOWS IN THE DARK. Really!
The shoes are by Crocs, no surprise there. At the beginning of summer they had them is super cute coral and aqua color too, sadly those sold out pretty quickly :'(
