End of an era

Just a reminder that my Etsy shop will  be gone by the end of the month and if you want something now is the time to buy it ;)
Some items will be in my www.dinafragola.com shop  and on Storenvy but I am discontinuing lots of items.
I could have set up a discount code, but quite frankly I can't be bothered :'D

Bye Etsy

Last product photo for Etsy
So I had been spending hours each day editing, one more time, my product photos for Etsy. I had been re-writing my tags , one more time. I had just reached 1300 sales in my Dina Fragola Etsy shop, which sounds good but which is not as I should have reached that number during Christmas season LAST YEAR...when it hit me like a brick in the face...I was wasting my time...in a big way.
Etsy telling you that your shop is not working because YOU'RE not doing the right things, not putting enough work into it is total BS.
Their website is not good for little shops, it got even worse recently.
The idea had been in the back of my mind for a while but it suddenly became real. I needed to let those shops go. I was not doing myself any good keeping them.
I am tired of being told everything is my fault, that  I am not doing the right things (not just on Etsy, but also by the unemployment agency...that is zero help)
It's such a relief in a way. It has only been a few days and I've already read 2 books in my new free time.
I am not closing them cold, I'll just let the listings expire which means my Captain Cosmos shop will be gone by February 17, 2019 and my Dina Fragola Etsy shop will be history on May 1 (because I still have over 8000 free listings I have to use up by December 31 and plan to relist my whole shop in one go on New Year's Eve).
I have not yet decided if I'll reopen them somewhere else.
I'll probably have another site for my pins and patches in a near future.

And don't forget there's 15% off any orders of 10 EUR + in my two shops until November 30, 2018 with code NOEL18
Dina Fragola, kawaii jewelry shop
The Captain Cosmos, quirky plugs, gauges, jewelry and cuff links.

Etsy rant

It has been a looooong time since I've been happy with Etsy. Have you been there long enough to remember the "Etsy Etsy Etsy Etsy" video? I have. That type of enthusiasm has long gone.

I made do with all the changes...but now I am at my wits' end. My shops had been doing relatively well, but they killed all competitions (A Little Market and Dawanda, that were my main shop sites, were bought by Etsy)...and I got nothing out of it. Worse, they seem to have done something to SEO which make my shops invisible.
According to the stats (provided by Etsy...) my views are OK...still no sale. And I have been promoting and adding new items on a very regular basis. Worse, I get ZERO custom inquiries, and I got quite a few of those in the past. I  bought some promoted listings, I didn't  break even with the 2 measly orders they brought. A stark difference to last year when I basically had no time to look after my shops and still had regular sales.
I know you can longer count on people browsing Etsy to get orders and I kind of suck at networking so this seems like an unsolvable problem.
But really, with shop one and  with with  moderately narrowed search terms my first item is on page 5 and with shop two, it's on page 10. Buyers rarely go beyond page 3.
I tried Pattern for a year, that really sucked. I had linked the shop to my domain and, seriously, I had less hits when it was linked to my Pattern site than to my crummy html page.
I think they deliberately make invisible any shop that doesn't subscribe to their new plans. I still haven't caved in.
First I'll try Shopify once I have more new items available.

Cute new items like this one ;)  (in case you haven't seen it yet...)

Finally new stuff

It sure took me a long time to start working on my shops again. Truth is I am bored now. They're going nowhere and I want to make new things I don't have the skills to make...and I am very reluctant to invest time and money in new skills due to my lack of  succes in pretty much anything I have an interest in...
Not in a good place...

Etsy Pattern website - my test

To be totally honest I had no intention of trying that new product by Etsy but I got a free year to try it out so I tried.
If you haven't heard of Pattern yet, it's basically your standalone website hosted by Etsy.
It costs $15 per month, it's free to list items (unless you want them to appear in your Etsy shop too, then it's the usual 0.20 per item).
Unlike Etsy you can sell anything you want there (as long it's legal)...handmade, mass produced, vintage, not vintage...

The good surprise is that it is really easy to set up...if you already have an Etsy shop that is.
It took me about 5 minutes to get mine up and running.
You can choose from several templates. I went for a very simple one. It is not working the way it should though...in the preview you're supposed to have a cool javascript shop window but it just won't appear on the actual website.
As I already owned my domain name I linked it to my Pattern site. Be warned that that part actually requires some technical knowledge but you can easily find help online.
If you don't already own a domain name you can buy it through Etsy which is probably easier.
All your Etsy listings will appear in your Pattern site. All is handled from the same dashboard.
You can't really make it easier.
If your item is listed on your Pattern site only, there's no time limit. If it's both listed on Etsy and Pattern, it'll be there for 4 months.

If you translated you shop into several languages, you can choose in which language you want your shop to be. You can also leave it on "default" settings and the language will adapt to the location of your customers.
Payment methods are the same as on Etsy, as are shop policies and FAQ's.

From a stats point of view...you're on your own. It's up to you to bring people to your website.
I have had my domain name for almost 10 years so it's hard to tell if any new views are coming from "Pattern" . And let's add that after 2 months I am still waiting for my first sale from the Pattern  site.

So in short:

The + sides:
- it's easy to set up
-it's easy to list new items
-you can sell whatever you want
-listings are free if only appearing on Pattern

The - sides:
-you depend on Etsy
-you still pays selling fees to Etsy
-you are responsible for your own promo on the Internet
-it costs $15 per month

What could be improved:
It should be possible to import items from another of your Etsy shops. In my case I have 2 Etsy shops but if I want the items from my second shop to appear on my Pattern site, I'll have to re-list all the items one by one...which is not happening any time soon.

Bugs

Strangely my view of insects (and spiders) has shifted 180° as I grew older. From being terrified of them (you should have seen me running from a fly or a ladybug when I was litte) I now really like them. I think they are pretty and fascinating...except maybe from cockroaches which are still a little bit disgusting...(sorry, cockroaches...)
Available in  my shops as earrings and plugs for stretched ears (I'm slowly listing them...)

The real Alice and Lewis Carroll - new items!

As you probably know, Alice in Wonderland  was a real little girl. Lewis Carroll who, on top of being a teacher, mathematician and writer, was also a photographer. We therefore have photos of her and himself.

Lewis Carroll was one of the first photographers, when it was still an expensive and time consuming hobby. He was very popular among famous people and royalties of his time.

By the time he took photos of Alice, exposition time had dropped down to about a minute (from over an hour a few years earlier)

But it was still quite an achievement to have little kids stay still for a whole minute.

Available in my shops....and remember

Instagram bootcamp

As I am on top on things, not at all overwhelmed by all the stuff I have to do and the cats and people I have to look after (huh...I might be a little bit sarcastic here) I decided to take an Instagram Bootcamp.
It's only a week, it started today and it was a spur of the moment thing...
You can join too here THINKCREATIVE
OK, I think my first photo stinks (you can check my Instagram here) so there's lots of room for improvement.

Unsaleable stuff...but very kawaii stuff

That is my main problem...the things I  enjoy making the most are the things I sell the least...if at all. As sales are super slow in the summer anyway, I decided to indulge  myself and make a whole lot of unsaleable stuff...
Like this pink poney extravagant necklace...
I have been told they're not selling because they're too expensive...indeed, they're not cheap...but when I'm done calculating the supplies and time I spent on them, I am selling them really cheap ...

...or this black bunny plush one!

They are in my Etsy, Dawanda and Alittlemarket shops.
